About the founder

I built these tools because I needed them.

I'm Shannon Mensah, a Bronx native with an MPH in Public Health Nutrition and the founder of Fresh Slate Health.

I grew up with Ghanaian and Jamaican roots, the first-generation daughter of immigrants. Food was culture, comfort, and connection in my house. But it was also something nobody ever gave us the full picture on.

Why Fresh Slate exists

Our food belongs in the wellness conversation.

I spent a decade navigating a wellness world that wasn't built for people who look like me or eat like me. A world that told me jollof rice and curry goat didn't belong in a healthy diet.

Fresh Slate started in 2017 as Fresh Slate Vegan. As the community grew, so did the mission. Today Fresh Slate Health is a food equity ecosystem for people who've been left out of the wellness conversation: find food on a tight budget, cook what you grew up eating, and actually enjoy it.

Healthy eating is an access problem, a representation problem, and a joy problem. Every tool I build goes after one of those three.

Background

Trained in nutrition. Raised on the real thing.

By day, I'm a Senior Program Coordinator at the Lehman College Health & Wellness Center, where I manage interns and health promoters and design and facilitate wellness workshops. Fresh Slate is where I take that work to the community.

What I've built

Tools, campaigns, and a community.

I build every Fresh Slate tool myself, and I use brand strategy to imagine what wellness could look like when it's made for us. My speculative e.l.f. × HelloFresh campaign even got a response from e.l.f. Beauty.

Let's work together

Bring Fresh Slate to your community.

Run a pantry, clinic, campus wellness program, or community group? Or a brand that wants to reach people mainstream wellness keeps missing? I'd love to hear from you.
